There's a lot of unnecessary improperly perceived competition between photographers. I see it all the time. People don't want to share how-tos or what kind of gear they use. They get jealous and sometimes spiteful when a client chooses another photographer for a different session.

Here's the thing: it doesn't do anyone any good.

Seriously.

Photographers are artists. There are so many different kinds of artists out there. Each one has a different eye and a different process. I've literally photographed the same session along with another photographer and we both come out with very images. It's so beautiful to be alongside another photographer, photographing the same thing, but with a very different interpretation of what they find visually pleasing and worthy of capturing.

Enter in my dear friend, Jamie Bates of Wicked Depiction Photography. A few years ago we shared a studio together. We photograph very differently. She offers gorgeous commissioned fine art portraiture that is highly manipulated, edited and retouched. I offer fine art portraiture that is NOT highly manipulated, edited and retouched. There has never been any competition between us. We've always supported one another in what we do. It's really a beautiful thing.

When Jamie wanted a session I was pretty stoked. She's a photographer who knows my process, so I knew she'd be up for trying all the things. She emotes beautifully. Photographing her was especially super fun because of her taste in music.

What were you most nervous about heading into your session?

Looking fat…I usually photoshop myself.

How did your session compare to how you thought it would be?

It was a million times better. I was so nervous and it ended up being so much fun and I felt so much sexier than I did before. It was so empowering.

What was your favorite part of your experience?

Wearing all the outfits and prancing around to my favorite music.

How do you feel now that you've experienced the session?

I want another one!

What was your absolute most favorite photo from your session and how does it make you feel?

My favorite is the photo of me sitting in the tulle and looking down…it makes me feel so pretty.
